Today was Fast Pass day for me and Miss H! She woke up at 6am (We live in Central time) to make sure we got all of the rides she really wanted, and it worked!
If you are staying on a Disney property, you can book your Fast Passes at 7am EST 60 days before your check in day. If you are staying off property, it's 30 days prior to check in. In terms of whether YOU need to get up early to book your Fast Passes, it all depends on the types of rides you are going to book. If you are going after big coasters, Peter Pan's flight, Test Track, Soarin', Frozen Ever After, Toy Story Land, or Pandora.... yes. Those rides book FAST! In my experience, the others have more general availability (you can book them as your second round in the park) and shorter line times if you do have to wait.
Since my mind was on Fast Passes today, I thought that it might be helpful to walk through how you book one.
To start with, you login to My Disney Experience.

And then to choose your Park. Remember: You can ONLY have Fast Passes for one park per day!

For this time, I chose Magic Kingdom! I only show part of the page here, but you can scroll down and see all of the available attractions and times. You can also tab between morning, afternoon and night or enter a specific time.

I chose The Barnstormer for a Fast Pass at 9:10AM

Click Confirm and you are done!

Make sure you screen shot your confirmation page, just in case something happens to your reservation. The page will then ask if you are finished booking or if you would like to make more reservations.
That's it! You can either book fast passes online at the My Disney Experience website or using your My Disney Experience mobile app.
