Disney World Reopening Changes - Explained

Writer: Melissa GermainMelissa Germain

I wanted to break down what we learned yesterday and what we know so far about the cancellations. I know it sounds so different than what we are used to with Walt Disney World magic and that many of these changes will be the final straw that causes you to cancel your vacation in 2020. I am here to provide you with the information you need to make the best decision for your family.

Opening – Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will open on July 11, 2020. Epcot and Hollywood Studios will open on July 15, 2020. All parks will have reduced hours. You will need a reservation to enter the park (these will be done ahead of time through a theme park reservation system on DisneyWorld.com, but we don’t know yet when they will be released).

Park Hopper – We do not know yet if Park Hopper will be valid. We can assume not since they are going to require reservations to enter the park. But Disney has not clarified this yet.

Ticket Sales – Due to how many people already have tickets in hand and needing to accommodate them, Disney has stopped all new ticket sales. Existing ticket holders and Annual Passholders will be able to make a theme park reservation before they resume ticket sales.

Disney Resort Reservations – No new reservations are being accepted for the Disney Resorts at this time.

Dining Reservations – All existing dining reservations and experience bookings have been cancelled through the end of 2020. This is due to limited capacity in the restaurants and experiences. Disney did not want to hand select Guests, so they have wiped the slate clean. They will reopen dining and experience reservations closer to the July 11th opening date.

Disney Dining Plan – Disney has cancelled the Disney Dining Plan for the time being. They didn’t offer much explanation for this, but I assume it is because they will not be able to guarantee capacity at the Table Service Restaurants that the dining plan credits entitle you to.

180 Day Window – Disney is implying in their release that they will now be moving all dining reservations going forward to a 60 day window to allow Guests to make their plans closer to visit.

FastPass+ – Disney is suspending the FastPass+ service at this time and cancelling all existing FastPass+ reservations.

Extra Magic Hours – For the time being, there will be no Extra Magic Hours at any theme park.

Shows, Parades and Fireworks – When the park initial opens, these experiences will remain closed. This is due to the close proximity that Guests gather in order to experience them. I am sure they are working on a solution that adheres to social distancing.

New landing page – Walt Disney World Resort has released a new page of their website titled Returning to a World of Magic where you can stay up to date on everything.

I hope this helps to keep you informed and to make your decision making process a little easier!
